AGRICULTURAL AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PROGRAMS

Other Projects

Fondwa promotes ongoing and enthusiastic work in agriculture and animal husbandry – the two main livelihoods of the residents of the area. The chief mission of the peasants of APF is to develop in Fondwa a true model of rural sustainable economic development.

For four years now, there has been a permanent team of Cuban specialists living in Fondwa providing : technical assistance on model farms and forests where alternative, organic, and sustainable methods are being introduced ; development of several production projects (pigs, chickens, animal food, bees and fish) ; health maintenance systems for animals (through a vaccination and animal health campaign, as well as a veterinary pharmacy); reforestation; rural extension; and sustainable energy. This is all being accomplished through extensive and active trainings with the peasants of the region, and has provided the motivation behind the creation of the University of Fondwa 2004: a “University of the Mountains” established to provide agricultural, veterinary, and management training to the 565 rural communities of Haiti.

Quoting directly from the Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba’s proposal for their partnership with APF : “The principle input in the project is technical assistance in designing participatory solutions that are locally-guided, socially just, and environmentally beneficial. Such grassroots responses to social needs will forge the path to economic self-sufficiency for Fondwa.’’
