L’ECOLE ST. ANTOINE

Other Projects

The school programs of Fondwa include a kindergarten, elementary section, and secondary section up to grade 10. About 700 students are currently enrolled, and in 2002, L’ecole Antoine was #1 in the region’s state examinations for students from the 7th, 9th and 12th grades. There are 32 teachers, plus three additional personnel. A computer lab, playground, and library have recently been added. And, the residents of Fondwa are very proud of the newly constructed school facility completed this year (see photo).

The school year is 10 months with tuition running on average US$30 per student per year (this includes books, uniform, state examination fees, and a lunch program). The average teacher’s salary is US$1,000 a year, but keeping up with Haiti’s devaluation of local currency is always a challenge. Tuition payments currently run about US$3,000 for the year from all 700 students, thus leaving a considerable shortfall.

Plans for the immediate future include the addition of one more grade (11), housing for students who travel over eight hours to attend the school, a photocopier, printer, and three computers, a reliable solar power source, more teacher training, and reinforcement of sports activities. APF also desires to integrate the students of the school into the ongoing projects of the community.
