The Projects of Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (APF) The Peasant Association of Fondwa, Haiti
SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
At the tenth anniversary of APF, the peasants of Fondwa decided to try a new approach. Their goal was to launch a number of small businesses in Fondwa : a poultry farm, a cooperative pig venture, a bakery, a restaurant, an international visitor’s program, and several smaller income-producing businesses. These ventures would begin to provide Fondwa with the income needed to sustain—and even perhaps expand—the impressive infrastructure already built.
To this end, APF received a Business Development Loan from Fonkoze—Haiti’s Alternative Bank for the Organized Poor. This loan enabled APF to jump-start these various businesses, and to open the APF/Fonkoze Commercial Center for Ti Machann (women street vendors) on the road to Jakmel. The Commercial Center houses the APF Bakery, the APF Restaurant, a Fonkoze bank branch (which is providing credit with education to the Ti Machann of the region), an auto parts store, a kofraj (a rental shop for materials needed for roof-building), and the Tonmgato Guest House (where visitors to the area can spend the night). The Commercial Center employs 30 people directly and at least 50 more people indirectly. APF has made all of its loan payments, and APF is proud to announce that the wholesale bakery is already a profitable enterprise.
APF is also exploring possibilities for new businesses, like a marmalade or peanut butter project, taking advantage of the enormous varieties of fruit that the Fondwa region produces.
