VOCATIONAL TRADE SCHOOL

Other Projects

APF is keenly aware of the lack of existing means for young people to support themselves. If the means exist, then the young people of Fondwa will remain to work and live in this rural region, providing hope for the future. The vocational trade school will give young people skills in carpentry, plumbing, and masonry – skills which will enable them to make a living in Fondwa, and possibly develop a trade.

This program will train about 25 students each semester, or 50 students for the year. APF hopes, once funds are located to purchase all the materials and tools needed for the school, to enroll the first students before the end of 2001.

This project provides a sustainable program for meeting students’ tuition payments at L’ecole St. Antoine. The students – which sometimes have trouble paying their tuition – will obtain the needed funds by selling their carpentry work (like furniture) and their services (like plumbing). One of the conditions for participation in the vocational training program is signing a commitment to direct a portion of earnings to an account with the APF credit union. Those earnings will be used to pay student’s tuition fees.

Students who complete the vocational training will be employed for different APF projects that require carpentry, masonry, and plumbing work. Our hope is to begin this professional school in carpentry, plumbing, and masonry, and eventually to add other trades, like couture, agriculture, animal husbandry, artisan work, etc.
